Wow is all I can say
This really rivals What I Did For A Duke.. can’t say which I prefer. It’s strange that reviews of the novel itself are a little mixed... this story was so wonderful and true and emotionally fraught. I listened in less than a day, and in one sitting. It was great to get to know Adam, who is a very different Eversea, and Evvie, who in classic JAL style, was a wonderful portrayal of a complex woman. I cried several times, and loved every second of this. Highly recommend and can’t wait for the next in the series to arrive on Audible. Also, this is definitely one of Justine Eyre’s best performances. The quacking in both Adam and Evvie’s voices on the settee in that very devastating scene really broke my little heart. So good. So damn good.

Spoiled by the reader
This is one of my favourite Julie Anne Long novels but the audible version was spoiled by the woman reader. Who told her to pronounce courtesan as courteSARN? Each time I winced. And the Countess's name was Eevie not Ev-vie.
The voice for Adam was excruciating - if Rosalyn Lander and Alex Wyndham can portray male and female voices, why can't this reader? To make matters worse, she made Evie's voice educated - she wasn't - and Adam who went to Oxford she gave a pleb voice.
I concentrate on the reading in this review to show how it can spoil a novel I already liked and fancied hearing.

Likeable heroine
Maybe I’d appreciate this more if I read the rest of the series. This was my first by the author, and it was OK. If I’d known the hero was a vicar, I wouldn’t have read it. There were many quotes from the New Testament, which is not for me. Still, the focus was more about their relationship than religion.
I’ll try another book by this author and see how it goes.
