Summary

Beautiful and brilliant, Kendra Donovan is a rising star at the FBI. Yet her path to professional success hits a speed bump during a disastrous raid where half her team is murdered, a mole in the FBI is uncovered, and she herself is severely wounded. As soon as she recovers, she goes rogue and travels to England to assassinate the man responsible for the deaths of her teammates.

While fleeing from an unexpected assassin herself, Kendra escapes into a stairwell that promises sanctuary but when she stumbles out again, she is in the same place - Aldrich Castle - but in a different time: 1815, to be exact.

Mistaken for a lady's maid hired to help with weekend guests, Kendra is forced to quickly adapt to the time period until she can figure out how she got there; and, more importantly, how to get back home. However, after the body of a young girl is found on the extensive grounds of the county estate, she starts to feel there's some purpose to her bizarre circumstances. Stripped of her 21st century tools, Kendra must use her wits alone in order to unmask a cunning madman.

An enjoyable if not very credible time travel tale

Like others have said the narration is not the best for this story- and it really did need to be sped up- I settled for 1.3 and that seemed to improve it a bit, but it doesn't change the slightly dodgy accents and mispronunciations.
The story itself is a stretch but if you go with it and don't question it too much it is quite good fun. Kendra is an interesting character and although some of both her background and experience doesn't hold together if you give it any thought, I quite liked her. The early part of the book where she is a FBI agent in a situation that goes wrong resulting in death, injury and leads to her going rogue, sets us up for what is to come when the time travel element is brought into play. There are one or two turns in the story but no real unexpected twists or wow moments. There is also a romance element that is somewhat unconvincing and yet despite all the flaws and inconsistencies I enjoyed this far more than the sum of its parts implies, and I will look out for the next in the series.

Awful narration

It was really hard to listen to this and the narrator ruined it for me. The change of voices between the male characters and their plummy accent or the police man’s cockney accent was unbearable. I wish I had looked at the suggestion to play it at 1.25 before, it might have helped.

Brilliant

Well crafted story with lots of little snippets of history linked in. Creative use of time travel - and an excellent narrator who brought the characters to life.

Different

This book had amazing detail and dialogue. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Hopefully the author has written other books.

T'is a good story and 'twas enjoyable but...

Lucy Rayner's voice may grate on you but her ability to switch accents and tone between characters really helps to clarify what's going on, so go with it. Otherwise if your whole concept is time travel to Victorian England the language and dress should be accurate and if you're not sure, there's no excuse these days - Google it! Muslin dresses and the T words were from the Georgian era, more than a hundred years earlier ...and not a mention of a corset either, a device whose constrictions pretty much defined everything Victorian for women. The irritation grated on this English pedant....

interesting entertaining story

an interesting, inventive and entertaining story. I like odd time travel tales and this is a good one. the characters are strong and well described. Kendra the FBI agent out of her time works quite well although her acceptance by the aristocratic characters is a little too easy. I liked this one and an interesting in following the story in future books. narration is excellent but at times is a bit light for the subject matter however it was easy to listen to with a decent range.

Play 1.25x speed, but spoilers in voices

Loved the story, however I already knew who the killer was waaaay longer than anticipated by the author I think. It’s because the narrator used the same voice for the anonymous killer as she did for the suspect who turned out to be the killer. She gave it away that way. Also, I thought Alecs voice was disappointing. But the story is nice!

dreadful narration

squeaky voice of the narrator was irritating. I had to turn the speed down to 1.00 for it to be bearable. Questionable storyline. No way would a Duke of this era entertain a mere maid in this way never mind work with her.
