About this listen
An astonishing story of human kindness, self-learning, incredible pain, unbelievable hope and the sheer power of love to change a life.
Christmas 1975 and Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is riding high in the charts. In a residential street just outside Cardiff, a persistent knocking breaks the stillness of the evening …
When Rob Parsons, a young lawyer, opens his door he finds a man standing before him clutching a bag of belongings and a frozen chicken. Rob and his wife, Dianne, invite him into their home, cook his chicken and offer him shelter for the night. What happens next is an astonishing story of human kindness, self-learning, incredible pain, unbelievable hope and the sheer power of love to change a life.
A Knock at the Door is the true story of Ronnie Lockwood, a homeless man who entered the home of a young couple, became a dustman and lived as part of their family for over 45 years until his death. But this is not just Ronnie’s story – it is also that of Rob and his family. Outwardly the two men’s lives were worlds apart – as Ronnie emptied rubbish bins, Rob flew on Concorde – and yet, they discovered they had similar struggles. Then the day came, at the lowest moment of the couple’s lives, when they turned to the homeless man for help.
But there were also remarkable turnarounds. Ronnie spent much of his spare time volunteering, including at a homeless centre, and ended up having a £1.6 million well-being centre named after him. Rob left his law practice and he and Dianne began a charity that touches the lives of millions of people.
You will have never read a story like this before, but at its heart is a simple message: whether we are a lawyer or a dustman – tomorrow doesn’t always have to be like yesterday.

A powerful story!
I found this a moving and honest look behind the scenes at the story of a successful lawyer, popular public speaker and best-selling author – who took in a homeless guy to live with them! It’s refreshing though that the author doesn’t shy away from sharing his own failures and struggles, which gives us all a bit of hope.
But this isn’t really a story about the author who failed in school and became a lawyer, this is much more a story about Ronnie – a homeless man with a dreadful start in life! It’s a shocking and heart-breaking story that tells how Ronnie grew up in care, was massively rejected, and yet ends up experiencing what it means to be accepted and belong to a family.
This story will powerfully resonate with anyone who's ever been neglected, overlooked, pushed around or disempowered. And it will totally touch your heart – get the tissues ready! It powerfully shows the healing power of love and acceptance, something we all need and long for, and how the simple acts of giving value to someone and showing kindness, can completely transform a person’s life!
It makes me realise that if we could all give out just a fraction of the love and acceptance that Rob and Dianne gave out, then the world would be a much better place!

So touching and thought-provoking
This isn’t the sort of book I would normally read but I was struck by an article in the newspaper and enjoyed this so much. It’s such an incredible story and the author comes across as the most incredible man. His heart, and the heart of his wife gave this lovely man Ronnie such an incredible life. A life-changing book.

What the world needs now …
I laughed and I cried. What a wonderful story of love and the power of friendship to help and heal. It also illustrates that ‘family’ isn’t limited to biology. In a world of division and fear the story of the Parsons family is joyful and serves as a beacon of hope. Thank you.

Unforgettable real life story
A very real and beautifully written story about the failures of our care system combined with the hope and love that still exists in our society. There are episodes of laughter and tears in this truly amazing story of a family and their ‘long term’ lodger and the legacy that they leave. A must read for all.
