About this listen

I was 10 years old when I came across Boadicea, and she became the first woman to make me realise that the designated future of a girl born in 1950 - to be sweet, domesticated, undemanding and super feminine - was not necessarily the case.

Boadicea battled the Romans. Nancy Astor fought in Parliament. Emmeline Pankhurst campaigned for female suffrage. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson became a pioneering physician in a man’s profession. Mary Quant revolutionised the fashion industry.

Britain has traditionally been defined by its conflicts, its conquests, its men and its monarchs. It’s high time that it was defined by its women. In this unique history, Jenni Murray tells the stories of 21 women who refused to succumb to the established laws of society, whose lives embodied hope and change. Famous queens, forgotten visionaries, great artists and trailblazing politicians - all pushed back boundaries and revolutionised our world. In Murray’s hands their stories are enthralling and beguiling; they have the power to inspire us once again.

Excellent. Enlightening and enjoyable

Informed, interesting and concise in it's summary of each significant woman. There is much to be said for each woman but the essential essence of their stories is surmised brilliantly. The selection of figures over the spread of history is on point and expertly presented.

Thoroughly Enjoyed

Gives an appreciation of women I would not have thought to learn about previously. Showcases the strength women have to possess to overcome prejudice, tradition, expectations and misogyny to achieve their goals and dreams.

Brilliant Book

Interesting choices, never accepted Madonna. I greatly admired the Russian journalist showing the world what was going on. Thank you Jenny., for highlighting these women.

Jennie Murray. History of the world in 21 women

Absolutely the best book I have ever listened to from Audible. Jenni read it so well and I was able to obtain some of my next book titles.
I’ve also started to listen again to some women I most admired or had never as there was such a lot included I don’t want to miss anything. I will use it as a future reading plan

simply loved it

Feel inspired after this book. My struggles as a woman are so small and normal to what these brave women faced. I'm interested to know why Jenni Murray didnt include Indira Gandhi. Being an Indian woman she is one of our idols.

Funny, entertaining and important

This is something that both women and men should read/listen. Yes, it is a feminist book, but the role and struggle of women in history has always been overshadowed by men - this book addresses that imbalance. I didn't even have to finish this before recommending it to my friends.

Interesting book

I like how each chapter is a mini biography but I would have liked each chapter to be named rather than numbered so it is easier to find a specific one later. Critics should note that this is not a history of perfect women but a history of influential women. We don’t have to like their politics to appreciate their impact.
