Summary
Bloomsbury presents A Heart So Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer, read by Melissa Bayern, Matt Reeves, Kate Handford and Davis Brooks.
In the sequel to New York Times bestselling A Curse So Dark and Lonely, Brigid Kemmerer returns to the world of Emberfall in a lush fantasy where friends become foes and love blooms in the darkest of places.
Find the heir, win the crown.
The curse is finally broken, but Prince Rhen of Emberfall faces darker troubles still. Rumors circulate that he is not the true heir and that forbidden magic has been unleashed in Emberfall. Although Rhen has Harper by his side, his guardsman Grey is missing, leaving more questions than answers.
Win the crown, save the kingdom.
Grey may be the heir, but he doesn't want anyone to know his secret. On the run since he destroyed Lilith, he has no desire to challenge Rhen—until Karis Luran once again threatens to take Emberfall by force. Her own daughter Lia Mara sees the flaws in her mother's violent plan, but can she convince Grey to stand against Rhen, even for the good of Emberfall?
The heart-pounding, compulsively listenable saga continues as loyalties are tested and new love blooms in a kingdom on the brink of war.

A good book.
It was a good book. I enjoyed it but I personally would have liked a few more Harper and Rhen chapters to see what they thought of the situation.

Amazing Voice Acting, Story a bit of a letdown
After loving the first book in this series, this second one doesn't live up to the hype. But it was still an enjoyable listen, and I absolutely loved the narrators, especially the female narrator. You could really hear the emotion and meaning in every line and it made her chapters seem to go so quickly! The male narrator was great too but she really stood out. Looking forward to the third book as well.

Great Sequel
A Curse So Dark and Lonely was one of my top reads in 2019! I love a Beauty and the Beast retelling and this is up there with some of the best. I have been waiting for this for what seems like forever.
The last book was told almost exclusively from the POV of Rhen and Harper. This book is told mostly from the POV of Grey and Lia Maria. In the first book, I loved Rhen. I loved him so damn much but his fears, his fears, they just take over. It makes him very difficult to like.
Grey and Lia are fantastic characters. Both grow so much throughout this book. Grey goes from loyal Guardsman to the rightful heir. But he does it so reluctantly and naturally that it doesn't feel like a betrayal. Lia has always been strong and a natural leader but she doesn't realise it. Her sister has been chosen as the heir and that's the end of it for her.
It was clear from early on how this story was going to progress. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the journey very much. I also enjoyed the whole host of side characters that we got to meet.
I am not very excited for book 3 which cannot come soon enough!

A slow starter
I really enjoyed the first in this series so was excited to read book 2 however it didn’t quite draw me in in the same way. I think part of this was down to the narrators I personally didn’t enjoy any of them so I don’t think I will continue with the series on audio I think I may enjoy the last one more if I read it. The last portion of the story has me hooked. Plenty of twists and turns to keep me interested.

Total character shifts from book 1
I really enjoyed book 1 in this series but I couldn't even get to the end of this one because I found it so frustrating. It's as if the three main characters are completely different people: Rhen is suddenly evil, Harper is weak and sappy, and Grey is... well weirdly obsessed with keeping a secret in a way that never quite makes sense, and he seems to think it's fine for lots of other people to die so that he can hide - which is entirely incongruous with how he's presented in the first book. I genuinely did not understand the motives for any of their actions, which left me super frustrated throughout. I also wasn't a fan of the female narration - though it was enthusiastic, it made the character seem like a whiney 14yr old, and she also voiced the male characters with unnatural intonation, all of which really killed off all the romantic vibes. When a listening experience feels like an endurance trial of my own annoyance, that's when I know I need to switch it off.

If book 1 was a gold coin, book 2 is a £1 coupon
Lia Mara was the most annoying. I don’t understand how wren was turned into a villain and Grey into miracle Jesus. Harper is all of a sudden a simpering tag along!?
The thing I liked about Grey in the first book was his subtle yet cool presence. In this one he is a bit frustrating. The whole book just seemed unnecessary and disrespectful to the first book and it’s characters. I only liked Tycho and Noah tbh.

A good story
I loved this story and can't wait for the next one. The ending explained so much of what was happening. I liked the overall male narrator but the female narrator was a bit shrill in tone escpecially when doing the voices of the queen and sister (mostly at the beginning)

Not what I expected but enjoyed it.
I was expecting to have the story follow Wren and Harper more than it did. This book follows Grey and Leamora rather than Wren & Harper. It’s a good story and hopefully will lead to book 3 tying everything together and we will have 2 happy endings for both couples. Looking forward to starting book 3.

This Book had me rapt
The second part of a well rounded story, set in a believable world. I loved it. The whole thing was enhanced by the excellent narration. I await the inevitable third book with anticipation.

This is just there
I don’t know what to think of this. I think a part of me only got through it because of the audio. The characters either had total personality changes from book 1 or there will be some magical revelation in book 3 that is the reason they became unlikable. Then you have the new character who was just annoying. And I don’t know if book 3 needs to happen, it just feels like everything is dragging out.
