Superb narration by Derek Perkins

I just finished listening to this book, and found it overall hard to follow. The first few chapters were good and well read, but unfortunately (for me anyway), the book began to jump to different eras and began to sound like more of a testimony than a story.
In the end, this book became more of a 'background' filler for me rather than something I avidly listened to.
Derek's narration was excellent, however I won't be continuing with this series.

I stopped caring

And by the end there were several characters I couldn’t remember at all popping up. It just didn’t engage my interest until the end.

Twist

Not to go into details. I really enjoyed the twist in the tale. It was hard to keep up with the names in the story, but the language it was written with was excellent.

enjoyable

Hard to describe what this is. Good v evil. God's interfering with humans and humanity and all that stuff. It's well done and I will now get the next one in the series.

A great fantasy book!

I love fantasy however after reading a lot I found myself not really enjoying them as most were repetitive and predictable, however this book has been a nice surprise.
The gore caught me off guard but was done nicely and the overall it was a very enjoyable read.
The narrator was great except maybe when he was reading out female lines but other than that I’m excited to read the other two books with the same narrator.

Good but a little too all over the place

I enjoyed this and the performance was good but the story narrative jumped between what might be historical events to current ones a little too much. I'm not secure enough in the timeline for that.
The end seems abrupt and although an arc completes it's a clear set up for the next book which is a little frustrating.
Really frustrating was the development of characters who I assume will never appear again after their death. I know we're avoiding the "wife in the freezer" but it held up the pacing which jumps from plodding to action to plodding. It's too stop start and there was no flow to the story.

BLOOD, SEX & MAGIC

If you're not a fan of tropes I'm unsure how you got here? Anyway, this has them in spades; prophesy, redemption, brutality...all that good stuff.

I'd say this was more Abercrombie than Sanderson - real grim vibes akin to Berzerk. Thoroughly enjoyable, actual stakes, great world building & baddies that actually felt truly malevolent.

Don't be put off by the sex, its not as prevalent as others have commented but it is quite graphic.

Well worth a listen - especially for free.

Bad

The good:

Describtions respect the reader's time. The narration is great.

The meh:

The plot is generic, the reveals predictable

The bad:

The characters are bad, the actions contrived by the plot and their motives nonsensical. Worse, even the author hangs a lampshade on how silly they can be
