Summary

HBO’s hit series A GAME OF THRONES is based on George R. R. Martin’s internationally bestselling series A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A CLASH OF KINGS is the second volume in the series.

Throughout Westeros, the cold winds are rising.

From the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding lands of Winterfell, chaos reigns as pretenders to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms stake their claims through tempest, turmoil and war.

As a prophecy of doom cuts across the sky – a comet the colour of blood and flame – five factions struggle for control of a divided land. Brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night.

Against a backdrop of incest, fratricide, alchemy and murder, the price of glory is measured in blood.

Editor reviews

One of the most read fantasy series in the world, A Song of Ice and Fire, is here in Book 2, A Clash of Kings, written by legendary author George R. R. Martin and in an unabridged audiobook narrated by veteran British actor Roy Dotrice. This phenomenal series has been the inspiration behind the colossal HBO TV series Game of Thrones. The Seven Kingdoms lie in ruin. King Robert is dead and the boy-king rules as a tyrant. Talk of an immense war is seeping throughout the lands. Available now from Audible.

"A Game of Thrones grabs hold and won’t let go. It’s brilliant." (Robert Jordan)
"I read my eyes out. I couldn’t stop until I’d finished and it was dawn." (Anne McCaffrey)
"Colossal, staggering... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world...one of the greats of fantasy literature." ( SFX)

Don't be put off by the negative reviews - v good

What made the experience of listening to A Clash of Kings the most enjoyable?

A great deal of effort has gone into trying to give different characters different accents and also on the emphasis and context of their words. It's not perfect and you do the odd accent changing like Tyrion halfway through book one but overall Dotrice does a good job and I've listened to about 60 hours so far and have no complaints. It just works. Criticism of the accents and the pauses are misplaced in my opinion. I read for my young children and it's not easy with even just a few characters.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Clash of Kings?

Tyrion confronting his sister about her incest

What about Roy Dotrice’s performance did you like?

As per my comment above

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Made me laugh at times. Some sad moments but no tears

People cry it doesn't sound like the show

The narrator is fantastic. People complain that he doesn't sound like Peter Dinklidge but first, this Audiobook predates the show by a decade and secondly, it is good that the book is being brought to life and not just a rerun of the travesty of the show.

I enjoy Tyrion being Welsh. I do wonder why Cersei and Jaime aren't though.

Another excellent performance.

I've watched the series, now hearing the books. the accents are different but once you get used to this, it is as good as the TV series with a couple of different outcomes. Excellent

GoT is just amazing!!!

So I struggle to read as I do t have time to sit down with a book, plus I just can’t get into a book. But listening to these is a whole other level!! Roy Dotrice is bloody amazing and his voices for the characters are amazing even if some of them are hilariously pirate like, but they fit the story and the characters. I only got into these as people kept telling me the books are so different from the tv series and boy are they right. I love it!

easiest way for me to read this book

I've tried really hard to read the book and struggled due to all the detail. It was taking forever. I found the narration funny in places, I really liked it.
