Summary

The Richard and Judy Book Club 2017 Best Seller

A beautiful, funny and surprising story of autism, family and love, perfect for fans of The Rosie Project, David Nicholls' Us and Nick Hornby's About a Boy.

Life is built on the little things....

Eight-year-old Sam has always been different - beautiful, surprising and autistic. For all he loves his family, dad Alex has always struggled to connect with Sam, and the strain has pushed Alex's marriage with Jody to the edge. So Alex moves in with his merrily irresponsible best friend on the world's most uncomfortable blow-up bed, wondering how to win back his wife and son.

As Alex navigates single life, long-buried family secrets and part-time fatherhood, his son begins playing Minecraft. Sam's imagination blossoms, and the game opens up a whole new world for the two to share. Can one fragmented family put themselves back together one piece at a time?

A Boy Made of Blocks is a tear-jerking, hilarious and, most of all, true-to-life novel about the power of difference and one very special little boy.

wonderful

I loved listening to this. I have a son with autism just like Sam. The author's own experience with autism shines through in the details and observations. Brilliantly written from the fathers point of view. I think it has taught me a lot about what my own son's father may feel.

A little predictable plotwise but satisfying nontheless.

sad to have finished

Beautiful and genuine

Absolutely loved this book! A beautiful and genuine story about a difficult father-son relationship that grows with the story. It has a brilliant full-hearted narration which took some getting used to, but after a while the narrator completely blended with the main character and actually gave him a new aspect of personality. Recommend this very much.

Brilliant book about the challenges and joys of parenting a child with autism. Made me laugh and cry but I was cheering them all on the whole time.

Absolutely Incredible

This is a brilliant brilliant book

Chapter 40 made me cry and the last few pages might be the best I have ever read

Life is an adventure, not a walk. That’s why it’s difficult

Super uplifting heart warming and so real

This book was extremely well written, and really Felt I was walking alongside them in not only Sam’s shoes but with the struggles that the parents go through also. It really explained so very well the challenges you have to face with a child who has autism. It really made me think and brought tears to my eyes.

Would read it again and again. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend that anyone would enjoy this book also who has either a child or children with some kind of special needs, or just for yourself and your own learning about who you are.
