明治期の文学者、夏目漱石の長編小説。初出は「東京朝日新聞」「大阪朝日新聞」［1909（明治42）年］。続いて書かれた「それから」「門」とあわせて前期三部作とされる。主人公の三四郎は母のいる九州の田舎から東京に出て、大学で学問や思想の深い世界に触れる。またミステリアスな美禰子との恋愛で「迷える羊」としての自分を自覚していく青春小説。「無意識の偽善家」として描かれた美禰子は森田草平と心中未遂を演じた平塚らいてうがモデルだという説がある。森鴎外はこの小説に触発されて「青年」を書いた。
