About this listen

The second and final book in the Master of Trickery Duet!

"Must be brave, stubborn, and impervious to the tempers of loved ones".

The first line hissed with history.

"Hours are endless, pay is non-existence, quitting absolutely forbidden".

The second line ached with truth.

"Able to function on no sleep, refrain from running when times get hard, and be more than just a living canvas but a lover".

The third thrummed with honesty.

"Other attributes required: forgiving, opinionated, and not afraid to tell me when I'm wrong. Must also enjoy being touched and kissed at any time of my choosing".

The fourth glowed with promise.

"Call or email "your heart, his soul" if interested in applying."

The final made my future unfold.

The advert was so similar to one I should never have applied for.

A twist of fate that brought two destined people back together.

A job I would take in a heartbeat if the employer could offer such terms.

But I wasn't free.

Neither was Gil.

Therefore, my interview could never happen.

The story drags a bit

After the previous book’s ending, I was excited to listen to the second book in the duet and know how Olin and Gilbert’s story ended. Let’s just say that the ending was a perfect happily ever after, but the journey was a bit tedious.

What annoyed me the most was Olin’s constant change of heart. She was already like that in the previous book, but it was always half-hearted when she decided to leave Gil alone. Here, after his last action, she’s more adamant that she wants nothing to do with him anymore. But guess what?

Of course, Gil finally opens to her and she understands his motives, so she has more reasons to forgive him. Which she refuses to do at first, so why another change of heart? It’s my main complaint about this book. I want a happily ever after, but not at the expense of character’s consistency.

Gilbert keeps being an interesting character, with one major flaw: he loves his secrets. As we learned before, one secret led to another, and he ended up pushing Olin away without explanation. ‘Bad choices’ is probably his middle name at this point. But all he does, he does for love. That makes him a beautiful character. And I think he grows up a lot during this book.

And we learn more about Justin, the eternal friend. Selfless, loyal, generous, it’s almost sad that he doesn’t get his happy ending. But in the meantime, we get a few meaningful conversations showing perfectly all the differences between Justin and Gil.

The suspense element in the story isn’t well developped, in my opinion. Not that there are plotholes or inconsistencies. Just that it makes little sense. And since we don’t learn a lot about the serial killer, he remains a mystery. It was a bit frustrating.

The narrators do again an excellent job. They’ll bring tears, I assure you. Especially the male narrator who has the absolute best tortured voice. The story drags a bit, but just for the pleasure of his rich and warm voice, I recommend this duet.

A Captivating Story & Listen Masterfully Done!

Pepper Winters does not disappoint with this epic conclusion to her “Master of Trickery” duet and what an ending it is, but then again, after that mind-blowing ending, you knew it was going to be a wild ride. This book picks up where the first book, “The Body Painter”, left off, and to get the most of the duet it is best to start with that book, it is a not to be missed story and it lays the groundwork for events that occur in this book and it is important to know the characters history and the complexity of their relationship. We learned why Gil was frantic to earn money and he is at his wits end with what to do, sacrifice one love for another, but he has a plan and hopes it will free him from his burden and he can live a happily ever after with the ones he loves but it all backfires and blows up in his face. Decision making has never been one of Gil’s strong points even in his younger days in H.S. and the incident with his teacher and he became a victim of gullibility because he had no one to believe in him or who would fight for him, other than Olin. It has always been Olin, but life had other plans for him, something that turned out great until it became overshadowed and overrun by with evil. And it is that evil that almost cost him his life and everything he loved. This story tugged on my heartstrings, for both Gil and Olin, Olive too who steals your heart and the show many times, Justin was pretty amazing as well. There is never a dull moment in this book and like the first book, the story is cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, angst, thrilling & suspenseful moments, heartfelt and emotions, and a once in a lifetime romance. Secrets are revealed, sacrifices made and then healing and forgiveness, I loved how much the characters grew by the end. Pepper Winters thank you for another amazing story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous narration, Will M Watt and Felicity Foster continue to deliver and outstanding performance, bringing these characters and their story to life. They had a complete understanding of the characters they portrayed, gave each a voice that was a perfect fit to that character’s persona, sounding believable and just as I pictured the characters to sound. They were consistent with the characters’ voices throughout the duet. Foster’s Olin was spot on, she grasped her every emotion and had you feeling every single one. Watt nailed it as Gil grasped his tortured soul with perfection and had you feeling his conflict and angst. Both were fantastic performing all the secondary roles too. These mega talented voice artists are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another exceptional listen.

Outstanding Conclusion!

This is the second and final book in the Master of Trickery Duet, a Dark Romance. Gil and Olin's story continues where the first book left off. Gil's daughter is strong, resilient, and so cute! Justin is a wonderful friend, caring and supportive. I would love to know more about him. The story is breathtakingly well written, complex, and enthralling. The storyline is raw, intense, and passionate, filled with secrets revealed, danger, drama, angst, and twists and turns. The first part is suspenseful and fast-paced, the second part is heart-wrenching and slow paced, and the conclusion is beautifully heartwarming. There is a lot going on in this installment. Gil, Olin, and his daughter deserved their happy ending. I liked the epilogues. Will M Watt and Felicity Foster brilliantly bring this story to life. They are both fantastic narrators. This is an excellent team author/narrators. If you like dark romance, this duet definitely is for you. This series is grippingly captivating, and I HIGHLY recommend it.
